for Cynthia

All that is gold does not glitter; not all those who wander are lost; the old that is strong does not wither; deep roots are not reached by the frost. — J.R.R. Tolkien

your deep roots below the earth’s surface

reach into past lives and dubious adventures

water flows through your veins

rings reveal wrinkles in time gone by

gnarles and branches offer steps towards the sky

climbing upwards towards your leaves

i grab hold of your sturdy body and raise myself up

one arm reaching, grabbing, pulling

foot planting firmly against your waist

still climbing towards the highest branches

unwilling to look down, only skyward

reach, grab, pull, reach grab, pull

onward i climb through twigs and brambles

perching happily along the way

resting on firm, strong branches

i feel your life, your energy

it awakens me

i feel currents of peace, kindness, and love

enveloping me

entrancing me

encompassing me

i am i but now i am you too

i feel you in me

your energy, your heartbeat

it fills me

i wander this earth with a newness, a freshness,

an ancientness

wisdom and light shine from my eyes as i carry you with me

freedom from fear, rejection, loss

i continue to climb, step by step, branch by branch

your leaves calm me, your branches hold me

the wind whispers melodies into my ears

i release from you and fly away

only goodness remains

i am i and you are here

filling me with hope
